Antabuse Therapy for Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a social evil. Alcohol addiction is rampant in Vapi,Daman,Silvassa belt. It may be because it is cheap, easily available and it has relatively less social stigma attached to it in this area.
There are many techniques available for kicking this habit. It includes :

Detoxification by admission if the patient is in withdrawal. Here, we also check his liver, kidney and other possible damages done by chronic alcohol abuse and treat accordingly. Sometimes withdrawal can cause convulsions, delirious behavior, psychotic episode etc. which may last upto 10 days.

With his willingness, he can be given an anta-buse therapy. This consists of a special tablet, which, when ingested, causes dislike for alcohol. During this therapy, if the patient takes alcohol, he may experience unpleasant feelings like nausea, redness of his skin, restlessness etc.

If there is any vomiting after taking alcohol, he can just replenish the fluid loss by simple nimbu paani, i.e. Lime water with salt and sugar. In very rare case, i.v. fluids may have to be given after admission. If any excessive sweating and fainting occurs, the patient should be given lots of water to drink and put on a head low position. A tablet Avil 25 m.g. along with Cap OMEZ D and tablet Wysolone 10 m.g. will cut off any excessive reaction to Antabuse, which may be required in rare cases.

Like all therapies, Antabuse therapy involves a minor risk. Most of the patients experience no more than minor side effects which are essential for alcohol abstinence.

antabuse-tablets.jpgThe Antabuse tablet is started on a low dose and gradually increased. We advise half a tablet daily for 5 days, followed by 1 tablet for 10 days, followed by one and half tablet for 10 days and finally 2 tablets per day as maximum dose. If the patient has the desired effect on half a tablet or 1 tablet, there is no need to increase further and one may continue on the same dosage which gives the desired effect.

Ideally the antabuse treatment should be continued for 8 to 12 months.

Anti-craving drugs (Acamprol, Topiramate, Divalporex, Naltima etc.) will be considered along with antabuse therapy. The patient should live a healthy life style which includes, regular exercise, yoga, meditation, reading good books etc and try quitting other bad habits like tobacco intake.
